Analytical (HPLC) Chemist

Job Summary: This employee focuses on analytical laboratory activities for specific testing involving HPLC; participation in a variety of analytical/microbiological support activities is required. Work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed in this position. Some additional duties may be assigned to this position, as daily issues are frequently unexpected.
HPLC responsibilities: Operates and maintains HPLC units (6)
  • Performs testing, preps and runs samples, and interprets results
  • Insures HPLC units are maintained in good running order and follows a maintenance regimen. Regimen includes bi-weekly (or as required) documented standardization/calibration, maintenance of columns, daily standard/equilibration run prior to use.
  • Responsible for method development and optimization of procedures.
  • Employee is responsible for trouble-shooting and equipment maintenance, including contacting service providers as needed and scheduling routine semi-annual maintenance. 
  • Employee is responsible for ordering supplies, maintaining inventories of required consumables (vials, etc.), and maintaining inventory of back-up parts (e.g., lamps, columns, needles, etc.).
  • Trains employees as required to run samples following an established protocol, and oversees adherence to this protocol. Assists in writing protocols, and maintains adherence to procedures.
  • Prepares reagents and assumes responsibility for accuracy in the preparation of reagents, eluents and standards.
  • Employee is responsible for data file maintenance, performing required calculations and maintaining required spreadsheets. Maintains technical records and prepares reports.
  • May perform chemical and physical analyses on a variety of samples, including food products and intermediate samples. Tests include but are not limited to organoleptic evaluations, pH, acidity titrations, sodium, nitrate/nitrite analyses, Brix, moisture, specific gravity, moisture, pulp content,  etc.  Operates, calibrates, and maintains scientific instruments, including but not limited to pH meters, sodium ion probe, spectrophotometers, refractometers, analytical balances, moisture balance, etc.
  • Maintains lab cleanliness, including end-of-day cleanup of work area
  • May include weekends to accommodate production scheduling
  • Any other reasonable duty assigned by manager

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory tests and analyses.
Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
Knowledge of the methods of food products
Knowledge of Quality Assurance Procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices.
Knowledge and use of PPE, adherence to safe laboratory practices.
Ability to handle samples and laboratory equipment.
Ability to make mathematical computations.
Ability to keep records.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to organize and carry out assigned program.
Ability to adapt new technology and methods to enhance program effectiveness.
 
Working Conditions
 
Education
Possession of an BS degree in the physical sciences or a related field.
 
Experience
At least ten years of experience in a laboratory environment: HPLC and analytical methods experience required.
